WEDDING PARTY DUTIES AND OBLIGATIONS

Roles and responsibilities can vary depending on your wedding expectations. Traditionally, the maid of honour and the best man will have the most responsibilities. The ring bearer and flower girl will be the least accountable since these party members are usually children. Here are the traditional obligations of the people in your wedding party in order of importance!

MATRON OR MAID OF HONOR

The maid or matron of honour will usually be the bride’s closest confidant. This person is essential to the wedding planning and execution process. This is one of the most important roles in a bridal party. The maid of honour will coordinate with the bridesmaids, arrange a bridal shower, throw a bachelorette party, give a speech at the wedding reception, and help the bride get ready on her big day.

THE BEST MAN

The best man will usually be the groom’s closest friend or family member. The best man is in charge of arranging a bachelor party, helping the groom through the wedding planning process, and may also be asked to sign the marriage license as a witness. Sometimes, the best man is also expected to give a toast or speech at the wedding reception.

ROLES OF YOUR BRIDESMAIDS

Bridesmaids are members of the bridal party who are there to support the couple. Primarily, they support the bride. Brides will often choose close friends or family members who can offer lots of moral support as bridesmaids. The responsibilities of bridesmaids can vary. Generally, they are expected to help with wedding duties and don colour-coordinated formal wear. They may help the bride as she gets ready on her wedding day. They will also usually attend a bridal shower or bachelorette party.

GROOMSMEN RESPONSIBILITIES

Groomsmen usually attend the bachelor party and help set up on the wedding day. They are expected to ensure that the groom has plenty of moral support on the wedding day. Groomsmen will usually wear matching formal attire.

ROLE OF USHERS

Groomsmen may act as ushers, or separate ushers can be chosen in a wedding party. Ushers are expected to help people find their seats at the wedding and keep things running smoothly. This is the perfect role for uncles, brothers, or family friends.

FLOWER GIRL ROLES

The flower girl usually sprinkles petals for the bride to walk on as she heads down the aisle. Flower girls are often daughters or family members of people at the wedding party.

RING BEARER ROLE

The ring bearer will bring the rings to the altar. The best man or maid of honour can be charged with holding on to the rings until the ceremony. In many cases, young boys from the family or wedding party are given the role of ring bearer. They are expected to have adult assistance.

OTHER ROLES

Certain roles are automatically assumed in a wedding. These include the mother of the bride, the father of the bride, the mother of the groom, and the father of the groom. The father of the bride will usually be in charge of walking the bride down the aisle. However, there are many flexible and creative ways to handle these roles, depending on your family circumstances. The mothers of the bride and groom will often sit in specific places during the ceremony.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Choosing the right people for your wedding party and knowing what their roles should be can help everything go more smoothly. However, this is your big day! Choose who you want and assign the roles you feel are most necessary.
